Australian central bank warns on rates

Australia’s central bank has explicitly warned further interest rate rises may be necessary as it attempts to rein in “uncomfortably high” inflation that is now forecast to reach 3.75 per cent later this year.

The comments surprised economists who believed interest rates had peaked after last week’s decision by the Reserve Bank of Australia to lift the benchmark cash rate by 25 basis points to 7 per cent, its highest level in nearly 12 years.
