Even before US regulators on Friday launched an inquiry into a potential conflict of interest between Apple and Google, Eric Schmidt’s position on Apple’s board had become untenable.

While the Federal Communications Commission move accelerated the resignation of Google’s chief executive from Apple’s board, the step had already been in the works at least since Google unveiled plans for a PC operating system last month, according to people familiar with Mr Schmidt’s thinking.
