“Thank goodness I wasn’t in the toilet!” was the refrain among holidaymakers on the Spanish island of Mallorca after four bombs planted by the Basque separatist group Eta, all in women’s bathrooms of restaurants and shops, exploded in Palma at the weekend.
No one was hurt – the timed explosive devices were small – but they came only days after two much more powerful bombs targeted the Civil Guard in Burgos and in Mallorca, injuring more than 40 people in the first blast and killing two police officers in the second.
