When Game Group reported a glittering trading update last Thursday week and promptly saw its shares plummet, there was talk of how retail stocks have been dumped in a box marked “poison”, with investors showing little differentiation between them.

The timing was not ideal. A day earlier, Marks and Spencer had delivered a profits warning. Overall, the FTSE All-Share general retailers index is down nearly 14 per cent in a fortnight.
