As historian Eric Hobsbawm said: “The imagined community seems more real as a team of 11 (or 15) people.”

Few nations are more imagined than the four (or five) that make up Great Britain and Ireland. Billy Bragg, the songwriter, pointed out: “The only occasion you’ll need an official document to prove you are English is if you are chosen to represent the country at sport.”
