Public sector pensions gap widens

The number of workers saving for retirement through their private sector employer’s defined benefit pension scheme slipped last year, while the number of those employed in the public sector and saving through a similar scheme rose, according to official data issued on Wednesday.

The figures are likely to fuel the debate over whether public sector benefits should be curbed to bring them closer in line with the private sector.
