Gas Natural, Barcelona-based gas and electricity company, has agreed to buy a 45 per cent stake in Unión Fenosa as the first step in a €17bn ($26.5bn) takeover of Spain’s third-biggest power group.

If approved by regulators, the purchase would create an integrated energy company worth more than €30bn before divestments.
