Barack Obama’s campaign on Tuesday accused Hillary Clinton of permitting an “insidious pattern” of racially suggestive comments following a key supporter’s remarks that Mr Obama had only got this far because he was black.

The row was sparked by an interview that Geraldine Ferraro, the former Democratic vice-presidential candidate, gave to a California newspaper in which she accused the media of a sexist bias against Mrs Clinton.
