India urges industry to avoid using farmland

The Indian government on Monday recommended investors to locate their new industrial projects in sparsely populated parts of the country to avoid confrontations with farmers over land.

Kamal Nath, the powerful commerce minister, said the controversy that drove out the Tata group’s ill-fated ”People’s Car” project from the lush state of West Bengal illustrates the potential risks of setting up factories in fertile, highly populated agricultural areas.
