Levy call under fire for ‘socialist hatred’

Labour backbenchers who are calling for a windfall tax on energy companies were castigated on Tuesday for their “old-fashioned socialist hatred” by a senior shadow cabinet member.

Alan Duncan, shadow business secretary, said MPs demanding a windfall tax had not stopped to think about how to impose such a levy, since many suppliers are not UK-based companies.
