Javier Solana, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, was set to meet Ali Larijani, Iran’s top security official, in Turkey on Wednesday, in the most serious attempt to address the dispute over Iran’s nuclear programme in seven months.
The meeting comes after the UN Security Council imposed two sets of sanctions on Iran in recent months in an attempt to convince Tehran to suspend uranium enrichment - a process that can produce both nuclear fuel and weapons grade material.
