Drive down any Istanbul thoroughfare these days and you will see a state-of-the-art shopping mall, typically billed as a “lifestyle centre”, under construction.

Retail centre fever has gripped this city of 15m, reaching new heights since last year’s milestone opening of the Kanyon shopping centre, a $200m, curved glass-and-stone affair which is home to all things chic, including a flagship Harvey Nichols store.
