MEPs bid to shorten UK work week

The European Parliament voted on Wednesday to enforce the maximum 48-hour working week, scrapping a UK exemption to the law that had been in existence for more than a decade.

The vote to end the so-called “opt-out” within three years was carried by a 421 to 273 majority, with 11 abstentions, and contradicted the position taken by member states in June.
