Korea National Oil Corp’s C$4.1bn (US$3.9bn) deal to buy Canada’s Harvest Energy Trust ends a frustrating run of missed opportunities in the global energy sector for South Korea.

Spurred on by last year’s soaring oil prices, the Korean government has made clear its ambitions to grab overseas energy assets in an effort to secure access to vital upstream reserves and foreign expertise.
