Merkel victory strengthens centre-right in EU

Angela Merkel, Germany’s chancellor, basked in the praise of her fellow European Union leaders on Monday after an election victory that strengthened the centre-right’s domination of the bloc’s political landscape.

EU diplomats said they expected Ms Merkel to put a distinctive German stamp on European policies, from fiscal discipline and climate change to the institutional changes that would be introduced if, as planned, the EU’s Lisbon treaty came into effect next year.
