Labour accuses Tories over spending policy

Labour accused the Tories on Tuesday of shifting policy “towards deep and painful cuts” in public spending, in an attack that draws the battle lines for this month’s party conference season.

James Purnell, the work and pensions secretary, was res­ponding to Conservative briefings that David Cameron would face “difficult decisions” because of the “economic mess” he would inherit as prime minister in June 2010.
