Royal and Sarkozy rebuffed by Bayrou

François Bayrou, the self-styled kingmaker in the French presidential election, rebuffed approaches on Wednesday from the two finalists seeking his backing in the May 6 run off.

Mr Bayrou left the door open, however, to the possibility of backing Ségolène Royal, the Socialist runner-up in the first round.
