Turmoil opens way for Obama to regain initiative

Barack Obama fought to regain the initiative in the presidential race yesterday as the Wall Street financial crisis threatened to stall the recent burst of momentum behind John McCain.

Mr McCain spent much of yesterday morning in a round of television interviews attempting to repair the damage from his claim on Monday that the US economy remained "fundamentally strong".
