Challenges ahead for Merkel as she is elected chancellor

Angela Merkel became Germany's first woman chancellor yesterday after the Bundestag, parliament's lower house, elected her in a historic vote as the country's eighth postwar ruler.

In a rare accumulation of precedents, she also became the first leader of a left-right "grand coalition" since the 1960s and, 15 years after reunification, the first chancellor from the country's former communist east.
