Growth is key for Schäuble as Germany ring-fences spending

The new German government will not start reining in public spending until Europe's largest economy has safely emerged from the current downturn, the country's next finance minister has warned.

In his first interview since his appointment was unveiled last week, Wolfgang Schäuble, an ally of chancellor Angela Merkel, cemented the coalition's central message that boosting growth, not fixing the burgeoning budget deficit, would be its top priority.
