Japan energy traders lead race to buy Mirant units

Japanese energy trading houses are emerging as the front-runners in the race to acquire the Philippines power units of Mirant, businesses that are expected to fetch $3bn in a sale this year.

Mitsubishi, Marubeni and Mitsui are all understood to be interested in buying the US group’s ownership interests in three power-generating facilities in the Philippines with a combined capacity of more than 3,000 megawatts.
