Meeting emissions target tougher than ever

The energy white paper exposes the central problem of the government’s low-carbon strategy: emissions cuts from now on will be far harder to achieve than in the past.

energy-thumb.jpgGreenhouse gas emissions must fall by 34 per cent by 2020, compared with their 1990 level. That will mean a cut of 18 per cent in emissions from current levels, and at least half of the necessary reductions are expected to come from the power sector and heavy industry.
