Indonesian prosecutors are making a last-ditch attempt to pursue criminal charges against the former strongman Suharto and may mount a civil case against him and/or his family should that fail, the attorney-general said yesterday.

Mr Suharto?s 32-year rule ended in 1998 amid protests driven largely by corruption allegations. Transparency International estimates the Suharto family accumulated as much as $35bn (?28bn) while he was in power, putting him top of its list of 20th century kleptocrats.
