The Takeover Panel told BHP Billiton on Friday to make a formal bid for Rio Tinto by February 6 or walk away after Rio asked that the rival miner be made to “put up or shut up”.

Rio asked the Panel last week to set a January 11 deadline for BHP, which was lobbying for February 15, after the two report their half-year results.
