The consortium bidding for National Express on Thursday sought to win over shareholders in the indebted UK bus and rail operator by raising the cash on offer and lifting conditions.

The higher cash offer of 500p a share – valuing the equity at £765m – represents an 11 per cent increase on the 450p a share offer from Spain’s Cosmen family and CVC Capital Partners that was rejected last week.
