Aid projects build better work teams

David Cowell admits that when it comes to providing leadership, he has tended to be like a bull in a china shop. But a week on a charity housebuilding project in India, with 19 colleagues from Reuters offices worldwide, has changed his perspective.

"You know that when nobody is better than everyone else, it's got to be a joint activity," says the 56-year-old chief sub-editor on Reuters' equities desk in London. "You have to adapt to people you have never met before, and come to an agreement on how to approach a task."
