Chile’s top court on Friday ruled that Alberto Fujimori, Peru’s former president, will be extradited to face charges of human rights abuse and embezzlement, making him the first former head of state to face trial at home for such crimes, human rights activists said.
Supreme Court judges agreed unanimously to extradite Mr Fujimori, 69, to face trial over the murders of 25 people, including an 8-year-old boy, by an army death squad. A majority ruled that he should also face five corruption charges, including the allegation that he embezzled $15m to pay a golden handshake to his former spymaster.
