John Bolton, a leading hawk in the Bush administration and long-time critic of the United Nations, was nominated yesterday as the next US ambassador to the world body.

A sceptic concerning international law who once declared "there's no such thing as the United Nations", Mr Bolton has been nominated at a critical time for the UN which is undergoing a review this year.
