Gamal Mubarak
NDP assistant secretary-general
Born in 1963, Gamal is the younger of President Hosni Mubarak’s two sons and an assistant secretary general of the ruling National Democratic Party. The former investment banker has come to wield enormous influence over Egyptian affairs. Admirers in the business community – of whom there are many – credit him with the formation of the government’s economic team, which has implemented a series of reforms. Many believe he is being groomed to succeed his father, but critics say the NDP plans to do so in an undemocratic manner. Gamal, however, has repeatedly denied having presidential ambitions and has been careful to cultivate a technocratic image.
