The threat of creeping protectionism across Europe deepened yesterday when Italy raised the prospect of toughening Italian takeover laws in retaliation against France's efforts to deter foreign bidders from acquiring French companies.
Giulio Tremonti, finance minister, said Italy was among the most "market-oriented" countries in the European Union and disliked protectionism, but it could not ignore France's firm line on hostile takeover bids.
