From the moment I heard a new Sloane Ranger book was in the works, 25 years after the seminal first one, I tried to guess what photograph they’d put on the front cover this time. It was bound to be someone famous, and I reckoned there’d be three of them.
After 10 minutes, I was certain I’d cracked it: David Cameron, Kate Middleton and the pop star James Blunt. Never mind that none of them quite conforms to the original Sloane stereotype; they seemed to epitomise the new, less class-conscious, slightly cooler, eco-minded Sloane of the new millennium. I was so sure I’d hit the bullseye, I felt quite smug.
