Online surge rescues UK retail sales

Consumers defied predictions in November by pushing up retail sales more than expected in spite of increasing gloom from the financial and housing sectors.

But evidence mounted on Friday that the pre-Christmas cheer on the high street might be short-lived. Much of the growth in sales volumes was caused by a fresh wave of discounting, while a long-standing measure of consumer confidence fell to its lowest level in 12 years.
