Art smart: how to donate artworks

In July last year, Charles Saatchi, the pre-eminent British contemporary art collector, announced that he would be donating a 200-strong collection of artworks – including pieces by Tracey Emin and Grayson Perry – to the nation.

Saatchi, who is giving the works by turning his gallery into a contemporary art museum, is not alone in making such a donation. Museums and art galleries across the globe are lined with works whose labels include the words “the gift of”.
