Security chief says wiretapping lawful

Stephen Hadley, the White House national security adviser, defended a controversial National Security Agency programme under which the US government has obtained the phone records of tens of millions of Americans.

"We have a series of efforts and intelligence programmes to try and prevent this country from being attacked," Mr Hadley told CBS television. "They are lawful."
