Cambridge financial lifeblood already being squeezed

For his first visit outside London since being appointed trade and investment minister Mervyn Davies did not pick the obvious heavyweight cities like Birmingham or Manchester. Instead, the former chairman of Standard Chartered bank could be found last week in Cambridge.

The city, centre of an economic hub in the east of England, is known in business circles as much for the high-tech "clusters" of "Silicon Fen" as it is for the university.
