Let the rejoicing be unrestrained. Not only did the US economy lose “only” 345,000 jobs in May, it shed a few fewer than thought in the two months before.

Sarcasm aside, the latest non-farm payroll report could mark a calming of the post-crisis panic that prompted US companies to slash jobs in almost apocalyptic fashion. It does not yet, however, herald a sustainable recovery.
