Castro praises ‘noble intentions’

Fidel Castro, former Cuban president, has praised Barack Obama’s “honesty” and “noble intentions”, in his first big statement after a five-week silence that led many Cubans to speculate he was near death.

Mr Castro, after missing celebrations marking his revolution’s 50th anniversary this week, met Cristina Fernández, the visiting Argentine president. He published an account of their encounter in his newspaper column.
