Mine rescue order underlines safety concerns

Orders from China’s president and prime minister spurred efforts on Sunday to rescue more than 180 coalminers trapped in a flooded pit in eastern China in spite of fading hopes that the miners would be found alive.

The unusual joint directive to local officials from President Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao, premier, to devote all resources to the rescue were published by official media late on Saturday.
