Councils forced to cut budgets

Three-quarters of councils in England have revised their budgets downwards amid rising demand for services in the face of the downturn, the Local Government Association said yesterday.

More than four in five have seen a fall in income from fees and charges, such as planning applications. A quarter are suffering a declinein council tax and rent receipts, while two-thirds report less income on deposits and from the sale of assets.
