Gartner, the research consultancy, came up with "The Hype Cycle" in 1995 to describe the wild enthusiasm and subsequent disappointment that typically accompanies the development of new technologies.

Written pre-dotcom boom, it remains highly instructive for investors and chief executives looking to bring ideas to market.
