Mubarak's party to vet his opponent

Egypt's parliament is on Tuesday expected to approve a constitutional amendment which the government is presenting as a ground-breaking democratic reform, but which the opposition has decried as a cynical gesture with little substance.

The vote on the amendment, which will allow the country to hold contested presidential elections in September, comes against a background of demonstrations and unusual ferment in a country where domestic politics has been stagnant for decades.
