Staff retention: Sabbaticals, training, and other carrots

When Cisco Systems was cutting staff in 2001 it gave employees whose positions had been eliminated the option of a year’s secondment to a non-profit organisation, rather than losing their jobs altogether.

Those who chose the package received a reduced salary but continued to draw benefits and have access to Cisco’s in house training.
