Whitehall cost-cutter takes over Tate helm

Tate & Lyle has hired Sir Peter Gershon, the government cost-cutter, as its new chairman.

Sir Peter, who spent four years in the civil service after his appointment in 2000 as founding chief executive of the Office of Government Commerce, will replace Sir David Lees in the role before the end of next year.
