Falling krona exposes consumer debt

Judging by the chichi boutiques still open for business on Laugarvegur, Rekjavik’s main street, the idea that Iceland is about to sink into the North Atlantic appears fanciful.

Most Icelanders approach the banking crisis phlegmatically, although some have lashed out at the generation of young and successful entrepreneurs who transformed the country’s business reputation with an aggressive attitude to overseas expansion and a taste for debt.
