Plea for unity as Shia shrine bombed

A bomb attack on one of Iraq's most famous Shia religious shrines yesterday sparked retaliatory attacks across the country and deepened fears that the country was slipping into open civil war.

After the attack on the Golden Mosque in Samarra, Jalal Talabani, the Iraqi president, pleaded with his countrymen not to allow the country to slide into bloody sectarian violence.
