China tries to salvage nuclear talks

China attempted to salvage the increasingly fraught North Korean nuclear talks on Friday, putting forward a fifth draft resolution that would acknowledge Pyongyang’s right to a peaceful nuclear programme but would impose strict safeguards.

The six-party talks had been teetering on the brink of collapse over whether North Korea should be allowed to generate atomic energy, but China’s offer injected fresh momentum into the discussions.
