Japanese ex-minister enters race to lead LDP

A former Japanese finance minister on Sunday became the first declared candidate for leadership of the once-mighty Liberal Democratic party, a role likely to be crucial in efforts to rebuild itself following a crushing defeat in elections last month.

Announcing his intention to stand for the LDP presidency later this month, Sadakazu Tanigaki said “drastic reform” of the party was needed and suggested he saw the job of introducing such change more as a burden than a blessing.
