Barroso warns Blair not to act like Sheriff of Nottingham

José Manuel Barroso, European Commission president, yesterday warned Britain not to act like the Sheriff of Nottingham, taking from the poor to give to the rich, as it seeks a European Union budget deal.

The rebuke came as Tony Blair, British prime minister, embarks on a tour of eastern Europe to win support for a compromise budget proposal that includes cuts to EU regional aid for the former Soviet bloc countries.
