Sale of Royal Mail stake shelved by ministers

The part-privatisation of Royal Mail was formally put on hold by Lord Mandelson, who yesterday told peers there was "no prospect" of the contentious sale going ahead at present.

The retreat from legislation opposed by many Labour MPs and unions solves a substantial political headache for Gordon Brown, prime minister. But the Tories warned that the decision left the postal operator's pension fund in an "impossible position".
