Tesco is to open a new insurance call centre in Newcastle upon Tyne, creating 1,000 jobs.

The location, together with confirmation that Northern Rock would be split into “good” and “bad” banks, sparked fresh speculation that the supermarket group, which has renamed its Tesco Personal Finance operation Tesco Bank, could be interested in the nationalised lender.
